BJP was also in the lead in a seat which it had never won in Mathura district.

In the 2017 assembly polls, BJP had won 4 out 5 assembly seats in Mathura. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Mathura about 20 times in his five-year term and had created the Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad for developmental work in Mathura.

Mathura city and other places linked to the story of Lord Krishna were declared ‘teerth’ areas (pilgrimage) and there were demands for a grand new temple at Sri Krishna Janambhoomi on the lines of Ayodhya and Varanasi. Mathura district had two MLAs as ministers in the UP cabinet.
