Azam Khan, the current Rampur MP, contested from the assembly seat from Sitapur jail. The SP’s founder member and Muslim poster boy is a political stalwart and former minister in both Mulayam and Akhilesh governments. He won the Rampur assembly seat nine times since 1980 – with the Janata Party (secular), Lok Dal, Janata Dal, Janata Party till 1991 – before the formation of the SP in 1992. Khan has 80 legal cases against him related to land encroachment and criminal intimidation. His son Abdullah Azam Khan is contesting the Rampur seat (Suar). The Bharatiya Janata Party has been trying hard to win the Rampur assembly as well as Lok Sabha seat for years, but failed even during the Modi wave during the 2017 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.
