Mission: Self-defence
HT City’s latest self-defence workshop was about tackling an attacker on the road.
As part of its ongoing Safe In The City campaign, HT City organised a self-defence workshop for the women employees of Shell India Markets Private Limited in Gurgaon last week. Jaipreet Joshi, a Krav Maga and Kapap instructor at Fitcomb, stressed on the importance of learning practical self-defence moves instead of plain techniques.

“It’s important to use the weapons of opportunity — WOO as I call them. Your pen, cellphone or keys can easily be used as weapons of self-protection,” said Joshi.
The workshop addressed situations frequently faced by women — if someone grabs you or tries to kidnap you or push you in a car. “The workshop was an eye-opener. I never knew that I could combat an attacker so easily with simple presence of mind,” said Preeti Vij, office manager at Shell.
“Tricks such as sitting on the floor or bending forward if someone is trying to kidnap you was very helpful,” said Bharti Puri, a participant. “The use of simple tools like using one’s knuckles to hit the attacker’s hand if he tries to choke your throat was very helpful,” added Vijayam Varghese, who also attended the workshop.
The workshop made the employees understand their strength and take the attacker by surprise. “Even biting or spitting on an attacker can surprise him and give you time to run,” said Chetna Sharma, another participant.
