Ranbir Kapoor is not only a good actor, but a skilled sportsperson too. And he proved that before an entire film crew recently. Kapoor, who is currently shooting for director Anurag Basu’s Barfi!, stunned the unit by showing off his skills as a batsman on the sets of the film.

The actor coaxed his co-stars and crewmembers into starting an impromptu cricket match of 10 overs on location at Film City, Goregaon, where the movie was being shot. After making two teams, the actor chose some of the crew members for his own side. He captained one team, while Basu was asked to lead the other.

“We didn’t know he is such a great player,” says one of the crewmembers, who was playing for Basu’s side, adding, “It was supposed to be a very friendly match, but Ranbir made it quite a serious deal. He was handling the team well, just like a professional cricketer is seen doing.”

The result was obvious — Ranbir’s team won the match. Those present on the set were surprised by the sudden, impulsive decision to turn the area into a sports ground.

Interestingly, no one had an inkling of what Kapoor had in mind. “He must have planned this move all along, as he just so happened to be carrying his cricket kit with him in his car. And he didn’t mention anything about any game until the shoot was over,” adds the crew member.

The actor plays a deaf and dumb, but very street-smart character in the film, where he will be seen starring opposite Priyanka Chopra. Rumours have earlier claimed that the role is inspired by British comic, Mr Bean, famous for his slapstick TV series. The film also stars south actor Ileana D’Cruz, who is making her Bollywood debut.

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Barfi! is set to hit theatres on July 13.
