It was expected to be one of the most grand royal weddings in recent times, but Bollywood chose to give it a miss. The wedding of the scion of the Jodhpur royal family, Shivraj Singh, with Gayatri Kumari was a lavish affair, but lacking in star power.
While the who’s who of the film industry, including actors Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and Hema Malini were invited to the wedding, only actors Kabir Bedi and Moonmoon Sen, along with her daughters Raima and Riya, turned up to attend the wedding on Thursday night.
Shivraj Singh’s father and former Jodhpur maharaja Gaj Singh, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot and former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje were among those present at the wedding, held at Jaipur’s Hotel Rambagh Palace.
Shivraj wore a beige achkan and saffron safa, while Gayatri looked resplendent in a traditional Rajputi poshak. The groom rode in the family buggy drawn by three horses.
The baraatis were dressed in traditional bandhgalas and Jodhpuris and colourful safas. As per Rajput tradition, the women did not join the baraat. The royal families present at the function included former king of Nepal Gyanendra Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia and his wife Priyadarshini, Usha Raje and Yashodhara Raje Scindia from the Gwalior royal family, the King of Bhutan and his family, and former union minister Jaswant Singh. “The occasion is of happiness for Shivraj and our daughter-in-law,” said Gaj Singh.
Buzz is that music icons Mick Jagger and Sting will attend the reception, to be held in Jodhpur on November 22. Sources say the two may also perform at the occasion.
