Besides showing up at social dos and taking to the stage for occasional theatrical productions, actor-model Suchitra Pillai seems to have stepped out of the limelight. Ask her why this withdrawal and Pillai is quick to reply, “You’ll be seeing a lot more of me this year. I just got back from a month-long holiday and I’ve got too many things on hand.”
Among the many projects is a musical performance, a theatrical one, a film and even a TV show. “The film is not new. It’s Chemistry, the one I shot with Soha Ali Khan and Shreyas Talpade. Hopefully, it will release this year. But I’m excited about starting work on a new play with Lillete (Dubey). It’s an adaptation of the dark comedy, August: Osage County,” says Pillai, who also hosts a TV series on Bollywood news for a South African channel.
Another recent thrill that has her going gaga is her music comeback. After making news for her famous collaboration on Kula Shaker’s 1996 hit, Govinda…, the singer is now ready to take the mic once again. “I’ve been singing since I was barely six. But yes, this is the first time I’m going solo,” she says.
Having launched her latest album That Is Life online, the artiste will also be performing in the city next month. “It’s an exciting line-up. My band is made up of a 14-and-a-half- year-old bass player, Mohini Dey, a great drummer Sapana Desai and Ashish Painoll on the electric guitar,” she says. Ask her about the highlight of the show, and she’s quick to tell, “I’ll be singing a lot of originals that I haven’t performed before —songs that I’ve composed in Hindi, English and even one with Malayam rap!”
