Less is more, but not on the big screen. While an increasing number of bombshells are throwing caution to the wind and going topless for photoshoots for endorsements, calendars or magazines, not many are game to do it on the big screen. Those who have subscribed to the bare-all mantra in the past include A-listers such as Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Kangna Ranaut. Others like Mallika Sherawat, Ameesha Patel, Mugdha Godse, Neha Dhupia and Sherlyn Chopra have also done the same in the past.

So, what keeps them from shedding the layers on screen? “They are restricting themselves from doing so on the big screen because they are cautious about the mass audience in front of whom they’ve built a certain sacrosanct image,” says film analyst Komal Nahata.

Celebrity manager Sonu Lakhwani feels that the privacy that photo-shoots offer gives them the edge over film shoots. “Anybody will feel uncomfortable going topless in front of 100 people during a film shoot. But, for a photoshoot, it’s just them and the photographer, so the celebs are more at ease,” he says.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt feels such breaking of taboos is a progressive step. “Let the alarmists take look at our own cultural heritage. Every conceivable sex posture is etched on the walls of our temples,” he says.

Divas, meanwhile, are loving it. While Mallika, who posted a titillating picture of herself on Twitter, asked her followers whether it was “too much,” Sherlyn simply says, “I adore nudity — it is pure.”
