Only Sonam Kapoor’s husband and sister, Anand Ahuja and Rhea Kapoor respectively, could turn a high-profile wedding into an epic fashion moment. Their stylish wedding looks consisted of traditional Indian bandhgalas, lehengas and sporty sneakers. Scroll for pictures.

There was once a time when the only shoes men could wear with traditional Indian wear were shiny leather lace-ups or stiff juttis. In 2018, thanks to the perpetual casual-isation of menswear and the rise of the high-fashion sneaker, the two can now work effortlessly together.

We can say that because at Tuesday’s Sonam Kapoor-Anand Ahuja wedding reception in Mumbai, the groom paired his smart black bandhgala and crisp white churidar with grey and white Nike kicks.

Anand has mastered the art of wedding fashion so well that it’s easy to forget he’s actually an all-sporty everything kind of guy. But with his out-of-the-ordinary reception style, Sonam’s better-half not only reminded us he’s the man behind a casual, fuss-free clothing label — Bhane — but also gave us the best formalwear-sneaker pairings we’ve ever seen. Perhaps, the only one who can upstage Anand’s cool wedding vibe with her sporty-meets-luxe wedding style is Sonam’s sister, Rhea Kapoor. The stylist-producer demonstrated the perfect ethnic Indian wear and sneaker pairing to add to our festive wardrobe, when she ditched the heels in favour of sporty white trainers.

The ivory Abu Jani-Sandip Khosla lehenga Rhea wore to Sonam’s pre-wedding festivities on Monday featured all-over embroidery, handcrafted embellishments and a voluminous skirt. To tone down the lavish lehenga, she avoided wearing sky-high heels and accessorised with comfy Nike sneakers. And we totally understand.

Only Sonam’s stylist sister and fashion-loving husband could turn a big fat Punjabi wedding into an epic fashion moment.
