It’s that time of the year when most of the slick fashion magazines are out with their biggest, all-important editions. September is typically the month when most of the glossies go to great length, to rope in the biggest supermodels and stars to grace their cover pages. Priya Tanna, editor, Vogue India says, "In fashion magazines, the March and September issues are considered important as they mark a change and arrival of the fashion season."

Most fashion magazines also try to go edgier in their September editions. Vogue Paris has actor Marion Cottilard, making a rare appearance on the magazine’s cover. This is the first time in five years that the glossy has chosen a celebrity, instead of a model for their September edition. Super model Kate Moss is Vogue UK’s tried and tested winning formula for the September issue. This is the model’s thirtieth cover presence for Vogue. Also some of the leading glossies in the US have women above 40 as their cover girls. Celebrating the new fashionable 40s are Halle Berry (44) on Vogue, Jennifer Aniston (41) on Harper’s Bazaar and Julia Roberts (42) on Elle.

VogueIndian innings

Closer home, Vogue has taken a Bollywood diva on its September issue cover. Tanna says, "The big fashion issue features Bipasha Basu in a lace dress — the biggest trend this season." Jamal Shaikh, editor, Men’s Health India, says, "We come out with a flip cover and a men’s health guide to style every September. So it’s a double cover for us." Shaikh adds, "We have Kunal Kapoor, the Bollywood actor, on the flip cover, along with a regular model. Kapoor reflects effortless style, a philosophy Men’s Health believes in.

Festive fervour

In India, a special September edition makes sense as the festive season takes off from here. Tanna says, "September heralds the festive season — weddings and festivals — which makes it a very busy season."

The editor of GQ, Che Kurrien says, "Magazine activity starts peaking from September because this month heralds the start of the cooler season. In the September issue, fashion magazines highlight the most significant trends."

The special edition trend alert: The September issue for any glossy is dedicated to fashion and beauty. Most magazines come up with extra pages, sometimes triple their normal number of pages to incorporate extra content.

Movie: A movie titled The September Issue was released in 2009. The movie revolves around the making of the September 2007 issue of Vogue US.

Big in volume: The biggest September issue so far, has been the September 2007 issue of American Vogue. It had whopping 900 pages.

Fashion seasons: While September editions are the most talked about, for most magazines, March issues too are big and fashion-centric. As the major fashion weeks begin during this time, the magazines are packed with all the trend-watch information.

Who got it best?
Harper’s Bazaar US celebrates women above their 40s, by having Jennifer Aniston (41) on their September cover page Elle US, has Julia Roberts as their cover girl. The cover is well-timed as Roberts’ movie Eat, Pray, Love is being talked about globally.

Vogue UK has supermodel Kate Moss on their September issue. This is the thirtieth time the model has graced the cover of Vogue.
