This winter, coloured nails, fur highlights and ‘hair’ straightening are haute fashion trends for pooches. “It's a new year and a lot of people are coming for a makeover for their dogs. People want to keep the hair long and not cut it short,” says Janet Saldanha of Paws Pet Salon, Andheri.

Mumbai hardly has any winter but still the fur of dogs gets a little dry and a lot of pet owners are coming for aroma therapy and oil massage. “The biggest trend this season is accessorising the dogs with Christmas-coloured bows in green and red,” says Gauri from Tail Waggers Pet Salon in Bandra. “Because of the cold, people let their doggies’ hair grow. We have regular customers who come almost every Sunday to get their pets washed,” says Satish Verma of Pet Aids.

Fur highlights which cost
Rs 1,000-2,000, are a huge hit. “They are usually done on breeds with long hair, such as an Airedale terrier and Blue Kerry. People love to use bright hair colours, mainly, pink, red and green,” says Preeti Sanjeev of Scooby Scrub. “The city is famous for its fashion trends. It’s nice to see people involving their pets too,” adds Verma. As for side effects to these treatments, Dr Vishal Sharma says, “There won’t be any harm if the colouring agents are of good quality. But due to intensive licking habit, sometimes, dogs might be allergic to certain elements.”
