If your dress is plain, glam it up with some quirky jewellery. Say, a multi-string neckpiece that falls till your chest would look great. A loop or danglers too would look chic.

Well-heeled:

Make sure that you flaunt the right pair of heels with a Shift dress. Stilettos or cuff-length gladiators would make for a great choice. If your dress is a mix and match of different colours, tone down to a single coloured heel.
