Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliant hat-trick in Portugal’s 3-3 draw against Spain had fans on social media buzzing about the Portugal player’s greatness as the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia continued to throw up great contests.

In by far the best game of the tournament so far, Spain forward Diego Costa notched a double before Nacho put them 3-2 ahead with a brilliant third only for Ronaldo to snatch a point. Ronaldo became the fourth player to score in four World Cups after Uwe Seeler, Pele and Miroslav Klose. He had also scored in the last four European Championship tournaments.

Fans on social media focused on the late free-kick which ensured Portugal would end up sharing the points with 2010 World Cup champions, Spain. The performance by Ronaldo also prompted some memes which focused on his apparent decision to leave Real Madrid following the team’s Champions League victory.

Mohamed Salah’s pain

June 15 could have been a special occasion for Mohamed Salah, for it was the talismanic Egyptian forward’s birthday. Salah won hearts with his magnificent performance for Liverpool in the Premier League and in the Champions League. After suffering a shoulder injury in the final, Salah was in doubt for the World Cup but he recovered in time and was expected to feature in the game against Uruguay.

However, there was disappointment as Salah did not start the game. The 26-year-old remained on the bench throughout and when the cameras zoomed into Salah on Egypt’s bench, it appeared on the giant screen at the stadium and his fans roared wildly from the stands. Salah responded with a smile.

Fans were quick to express their disappointment of Salah being benched on social media.
