The police suspect a rival gang to be behind the attack.
The incident took place in Jhajjar district’s Orangpur village around 3.30 pm. According to the police, around 10-15 men ambushed the van.
The criminals were lodged at Gurgaon’s Bhondsi Jail and were taken to Jhajjar for a court hearing on Saturday. The prison van was returning to Gurgaon when it was attacked.
According to police, a truck first hit past the van, halting it completely. Within seconds, three cars emerged. Assailants came out of the vehicles and started firing at the van.
“There were six policemen in the van out of which head constable Vinod and constable Vivek were hit. After shooting the criminals, the assailants fled the spot,” said Alok Kumar Mittal, IGP (Rohtak Range).
The victims have been identified as Shree Bhagwan, Dilbag and Anil alias Fauji — all three were part of a gang.
Bhagwan and Dilbag were brothers and hailed from Rohtak’s Koror village while Fauji was a resident of Chiri village, also in Rohtak. The three were facing trial in the 2001 Fauji Dhaba murder case.
