‘Baba’ promises 100% solution to marital problem, dupes Gurugram woman of ₹60,000

The accused, Majid, operates from an office near the city bus stand in Gurugram and was arrested in 2017 as well.

A man who promised “100%” solution to job-related, marital and relationship problems, including issues of pregnancy and infertility, was arrested from his office near the city bus stand, the police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Majid, 33, of Uttar Pradesh, who used to sell amulets, was arrested on Tuesday evening, following a complaint from a woman that she was cheated by the accused, Subhash Boken, spokesperson for Gurugram police, said.

Majid, who went by the name of ‘Sufi Shaahbuddin’, put up posters at the bus stand and nearby areas advertising his services, along with his phone number, to trap gullible people, sub-inspector, Kapoor Singh, the investigating officer, said.

Majid was previously arrested in 2017 for allegedly duping couples on the pretext of resolving their problems of infertility.

He was arrested again on Tuesday after the woman complained to police that Majid promised to set right her relationship with her husband and allegedly took around ₹60,000 in three instalments.

“After taking around ₹60,000 from her, including ₹46,000 for sacrificing four goats, the accused told the woman that her problem cannot be solved. The woman, who is a graduate, felt cheated and complained to the police,” he said.

Paramjeet, 38, who runs a business next to Majid’s office, said that on Wednesday morning, more than half a dozen people had come looking for him.

“Last year, he was arrested for selling medicines that would help couples have a boy. He was released in two days,” he added. “More people started visiting him after his arrest was publicised in the media.”

Locals said Majid had been operating out of the office for the last three to four years. A city court has sent the accused to two days’ police custody.
