Domestic help found dead in housing society in Gurugram, suicide suspected

The body of a 40-year-old domestic help from Nepal was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside her room in DLF Aralias, an upscale condominium in DLF-5 late Wednesday.

No suicide note was recovered from the room, the police said. The Sushant Lok police have initiated an inquest under Section 174 of the CrPc.

Police said the deceased, identified as Kami Tanangi, of Sindhupalchok district in Nepal, had been working as a full-time help at one of the apartments in DLF Aralias.

According to the police, she used to work for a Romanian couple and was hired seven months ago to do household chores.

“The wife of the employer had left for Romania for two months on June 1 along with her two children. The man has been staying alone in the apartment. The domestic help and the driver, Prem, lived in two rooms in the apartment,” Anil Kumar, ACP (DLF), said.

The police refused to share the name of the woman’s employer.

“She started living in the apartment last week. Earlier, she travelled from Shahpur Jat in Delhi, where she lived with her daughter,” Kumar said.

According to the police, the foreign national returned home around 8.40pm and asked Kami to fill a water bucket but found that it was not done. He then asked the driver to check on Kami but their knocks went unanswered.

“The driver broke open the door and found her hanging. A team from Sushant Lok police station rushed to the spot and took her to the civil hospital where she was declared dead,” Kumar said.

Her family members reached Gurugram on Thursday morning. “We were informed that she was unwell as she suffered from low blood pressure. We told Prem we wouldn’t be able to come but he said it was an emergency. We all rushed here and found her dead,” Meera Lama, deceased’s mother-in-law, said.

Lama also said Kami had been depressed for long as her son was suffering from throat cancer and she wanted to get him operated in Delhi but was unable to get money for the same.

Sushila Syangba, the daughter of deceased, said a post-mortem examination has been conducted and they would conduct the last rites in Malviya Nagar.

“My father will reach Delhi on Thursday night. My brother is unwell and his condition worsened on Wednesday evening. My mother must have felt helpless and could have hanged herself,” Syangba said.
