Gurgaon police commits to going cashless in a month

All transactions involving the police and its traffic wing will be carried out digitally

In accordance with the government’s directives, the Gurgaon police has committed to completely switch to cashless transactions from next month. If implemented, the development would mean all transactions involving the police and its traffic wing, such as issuing and collecting challans, passport verification, character verification, etc, will be carried out digitally.

The announcement was made by commissioner of police, Gurgaon, Sandeep Khirwar, during a review meeting chaired by additional chief secretary (home) Ram Niwas on Tuesday.

Niwas advised the police commissioner to ensure that the process of switching to cashless payments is completed in a month. “Expedite whatever steps need to be taken in this regard, be it purchasing point of sale (POS) machines or making provisions for electronic wallets,” Niwas told Khirwar.

The police department has started shifting to digital means of collecting fines, in addition to training its personnel in online banking. Over 3,000 personnel are being trained in batches since last month. The traffic department has also initiated the process of collecting fines digitally.

“We have already begun the process in the traffic department and are acquainting the staff with online payments. I think we will be able to completely switch over to the digital mode in a month, as wanted by the state government,” Khirwar said on the sidelines of the meeting.

The traffic department has also provided card swipe machines to on-duty personnel to recover fines from violators on the spot. It has also started the process of purchasing POS machines for the challan branch at Traffic Tower in Sushant Lok.

“We are in touch with representatives of the digital wallet service Paytm and will have an account soon,” said a traffic official, adding that violators would be made to pay fines on the spot using online means of payment.
