Gurgaon: Repair work disrupts traffic movement at Rajiv Chowk, more snarls expected
NHAI officials said the recent monsoon showers led to a portion of Rajiv Chowk developing potholesUpdated: Aug 01, 2017, 23:33 IST
Owing to repair work at Rajiv Chowk by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) leading to encroachment on two lanes of the service road, traffic movement from Manesar to New Delhi was disrupted for two hours at the junction during peak morning hours.
NHAI officials said that with the ongoing construction of three underpasses at the junction and the movement of heavy vehicles, the solidity of the road is being compromised. Hence, this necessitated the sudden repair work that disrupted traffic movement at the junction on Monday. The situation is likely to persist over the next few weeks.
The underpass at Bakhtawar Singh Road in front of Tau Devi Lal Stadium and leading towards the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway is expected to open on August 15.
According to NHAI officials, a stretch of the service road developed potholes and its condition started deteriorating following monsoon showers.
The road’s condition became so severe on Tuesday morning that authorities had to start resurfacing work immediately.
According to Gurgaon police officers, between 8am and 10am, only one lane was open to traffic movement.
Since the repair work was not planned and no prior information or alert on the same was sent out to commuters, Gurgaon police said they acted only after getting word of the traffic disruption from them on Monday.
“We weren’t aware of the repair work. We learnt about the development after getting reports of snarls. As soon as we got word of traffic disruption, a team of traffic police officers were deployed at the junction to barricade the stretch where repair work was being carried out and restore normal traffic flow,” Simardeep Singh, deputy commissioner of police, (traffic), said.
Gurgaon police also sent out alerts through social media, informing commuters about the disruption and asking them to avoid the stretch.
“Traffic alert Additional repair work at Rajiv Chowk from Jaipur to Delhi side service road leading to congestion. Avoid this stretch. (sic)” Gurgaon police tweeted.
Rajiv Chowk connects commuters to Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, Sohna Road, Manesar, Civil Lines, Mini-Secretariat, Medanta-the Medicity hospital, sectors 11 and15 and Tau Devi Lal stadium and hence, remains busy through the day.
Some commuters crossing the stretch said that they received alerts on their smartphones on the traffic disruption on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and were able to avoid the congestion.
“I received an alert about the Gurgaon police tweet on the disruption at Rajiv Chowk and was able to avoid the congestion by taking the Signature Tower route,” Nilesh Dayal, a resident of Nirvana Country said.
