Heavy rain brings traffic to a halt on waterlogged roads

According to commuters, waterlogging was less as compared to last Monday. However, they found it difficult to reach their destination because of snarls during the peak morning hours.

The worst-hit areas were major junctions on the expressway, including Cyber City, Shankar Chowk, Iffco Chowk, Signature Towers, Rajiv Chowk, MG Road, Old Delhi Road, Ghata Chowk, Sector 15 and older parts of Gurgaon.

Traffic on all major arterial roads connecting Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road and Gurgaon Expressway moved at a snail’s pace. Bottlenecks on sector roads left most commuters taking detours during peak hours to reach offices.

The pressure of highway jams soon shifted to the city’s arterial roads and Old Delhi Road. Vehicular movement came to a standtill around 8.30 am and similar jams were also reported in the evening.

The Delhi-Jaipur side was more affected owing to heavy traffic. MG Road, Sector 29 road, Cyber City, Sector 15 and Udyog Vihar also witnessed snarls as commuters searched for alternative routes.

“It took me 40 minutes to cross the Moulsari Avenue Road, DLF City Phase 3,” said Mahima Agarwal, a daily commuter.

“It took me 30 minutes to cover a kilometer of distance from my office in Udyog Vihar and Shankar Chowk on the Gurgaon Expressway. The service lane was totally jammed,” said Anup Singh, another daily commuter.

Though traffic cops were seen doing their best to manage traffic, they were not of much help.

Officials of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) suggest that residents should expect sudden showers in the coming week.

According to the data provided by the IMD, the city received 3.96 mm of rain on Tuesday. This resulted in a fall in the temperature, with the minimum temperature dipping to 22.2 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature remained at 36 degrees Celsius.
