Locals fear defence varsity may meet KMP eway fate

Local villagers fear that the Indian National Defence University (INDU), whose foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Binola village on Thursday, may meet the same fate as the inordinately-delayed Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway and fail to meet its 2018-19 deadline.

“Having exceeded its deadline by more than four years, the KMP Expressway is far from ready. No authority has paid heed to our problems that we have been facing due to the ongoing construction. Forget economic benefits, the expressway has become a major roadblock for us,” said Omprakash, who deals in milk business.

The cluster of villages, including Pukharpur, Mokalwas, Panchgaon, Gwalior, Chaindla, Khajalwas and Kukdola, are situated en route the proposed expressway, close to INDU.

“We are not too hopeful about getting more customers and growing business. Who knows when the university’s construction will complete and when it will start functioning. It might take years like the expressway,” said Vikram Yadav, a general store owner from Panchgaon.

Another resident, Dev Yadav, 21, said no villager plans to explore economic opportunities near the new defence university. “Things are moving at a snail’s pace and there is no opportunity for growth yet,” he added.
