The Iffco Chowk underpass, a unidirectional L-shaped structure meant for commuters travelling from the HUDA City Centre to Sikanderpur on MG Road, is all set to open this Sunday.
The inauguration, however, will be conducted without much fanfare by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as the model code of conduct, for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, has been imposed.
Work on the underpass — which was stuck for one-and-a-half years — resumed last month soon after a sole petrol pump, which fell in the structure’s allignment, was removed on February 5.
The fuel station was removed after the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran, on the direction of the Supreme Court, allotted an alternative site to the owner on January 28 this year.
NHAI consultant Saurabh Singhal said they completed the work in one month and now only the high power transmission towers needed to be shifted from the service roads. “This will not impede traffic on the underpass, but if the power department cooperates, then it will also be completed soon,” he maintained.
According to officials, the underpass was conceptualised in 2016 as part of traffic improvement work at three major junctions. The underpass was part of a Rs 1,000-crore NHAI project, officials said.
