Having a diet rich in grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, walnuts, and olive oil can help you keep heart troubles and diabetes at bay, reveals a study published in this month's edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Findings of the study, conducted by Katherine Esposito of the Second University of Naples, Italy, and colleagues, reveal that consuming a Mediterranean-style diet that includes whole grains, fruits, olive oil etc, is effective in reducing metabolic syndrome which is a significant factor in enhancing risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

The researchers also found that this diet also had a beneficial effect on Endothelial cells that make up the inside of blood vessels and improved their functioning.

The researchers found that after following the diet for two years showed a significant decrease in body weight, blood pressure, levels of glucose, insulin ,total cholesterol and overall prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was reduced by approximately one half.

Researchers are hopeful that their findings would prove to be significant for dietary control based treatments for heart troubles and diabetes.
