Summer’s here and it brings with it various diseases and infections. While the viral cough and cold are widely known, this is also the worst time for those who suffer from sinusitis. From the excruciating headache to the constantly congested feeling, a sinus problem can be difficult to handle.

“Avoid movement from one extreme temperature to another. Don’t go from an air-conditioned environment to an extremely sunny one,” suggests Dr Rohit Gulati, consultant, ENT, BLK Memorial Hospital. Stretching exercising can ease the pain in the neck area. “Do not use nasal drops available over the counter without consulting your doctor as they may lead to dryness and other associated problems,” he adds.

Consuming refrigerated drinks can aggravate the problem, so stick to lukewarm water and hot liquids till the summer sets in properly. Consume adequate water to keep yourself well hydrated. “Water borne diseases are also a recurrent problem at the onset of summer so be careful while consuming liquids. Consuming roadside food, like cut fruits and fruit juices can lead to intestinal infections and water borne diseases respectively,” says Dr Arpit Jain, internal medicine, Artemis Health Institute.

According to Dr Gulati, those who are troubled by allergies have a tough time in this season. “One can be allergic to just about anything but if you know you are allergic to dust, pollen grains, perfumes and deodorants then protect yourself accordingly. Certain symptoms of these allergies are a runny nose, nasal stuffiness and watering from the eyes,” he says.
