A city hospital in Coimbatore has come out with a sub-specialistation system in treatment and cure of cancer, which would be organ based.Unlike a single person treating a variety of cancers, the Valavadi Narayanaswamy Cancer Centre (VNCC), a unit of GKNM Hospital, has begun individual cancer clinics for specific types of cancer, Dr T Balaji, Director of VNCC told reporters on Tuesday.
To start with, the clinics would be providing tretment for breast oncology, gastrointestinal oncology, gynaecologic oncology and head and neck oncology, Balaji said.Each clinic has a multi-disciplinary team comprising surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, who work together, he said.Each patient is discussed on the multi-discilinary meet where the entire treatment plan is chalked out before instituting the treatment, Dr Ramkumar Ganapathy, Dean of the hospital, said.
Apart from this, a separate Hemato-oncology clinic to treat patients with blood cancer exclusively would also be started he said.About 3,000 new patients are being registered and treated in the institute annually, Balaji said.
