Jennifer Lawrence will play Fidel Castro’s lover in a new film, called Marita, produced by Sony. Eric Singer of American Hustle fame will write the script.
Lawrence has been nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for Joy -- a semi-biographical movie, directed by David O Russell, about a self-made American millionaire (Joy Mangano) who shot to fame and made her money by inventing the Miracle Mop. The film has already won her a Golden Globe.
Lawrence seems to have a way with biopics. For the American actor, after Joy, it will be Marita Lorenz -- a woman of myriad and mystifying shades.
Marita, a German, was incarcerated in a Nazi concentration camp when she was a five-year-old baby. But her life turned around at 20, when she became Castro’s mistress. However, Marita craved for more and more, and she became the lover of several mafia men as well as a South American dictator.
There is more. She is also known to have been an acquaintance of Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who shot American President John Kennedy. And, here is the cream of it all: She worked as a CIA and FBI agent, a kind of Mata Hari, and was supposedly involved in an attempt to assassinate Castro.
Not an easy part to play, but Lawrence has had an illustrious career, having gained international fame after stepping into the shoes of heroine Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games movies (2012 to 2015). Her part in Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook in 2012 earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Lawrence will be next be seen in X-Men: Apocalypse and the science-fiction drama, Passengers. She will be part of Darren Aronofsky’s (Black Swan) yet-to-be-titled work and Steven Spielberg’s It’s What I Do -- the fascinating story of a woman war photographer.
For Jennifer Lawrence, this certainly looks like a magnificently illuminated slate, and wow, what a great journey it has been from Hunger Games to Marita.
