The Great Wall trailer: Matt Damon’s Chinese monster movie looks stunning
The first trailer for Matt Damon’s The Great Wall, the new film by legendary Chinese director Zhang Yimou is out, and it looks absolutely stunning.
Be warned, it’s a teaser trailer, but unlike other, which show no more than a couple of money shots or loud bangs, this one, in one-and-a-half minutes, does what it says: It teases.
It revolves around an elite group of soldiers led by Matt Damon, stationed at the Great Wall during its construction. But the most intriguing moment in the trailer is not one of the many spectacular shots of the sweeping Chinese landscape, but a title card that ponders: One of mankind’s greatest wonders. 1700 years to build. 5500 miles long. What were they trying to keep out?
And then, it turns into a monster movie. It almost makes you wish they’d kept it a secret. But now that we do know that the Wall was built to keep monsters out of China, and that Matt Damon led the stand against them, we can hope for an adventurous epic.
Zhang Yimou has been given a proper budget to work with, and it shows. If he can bring the same scope he brought to Hero or House of Flying Daggers, then The Great Wall could be one of the better surprises of the year.
It also stars Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Hanyu Zhang, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Kenny Lin, Junkai Wang, Zheng Kai, Cheney Chen, Xuan Huang and Andy Lau.
The Great Wall is slated for a February 2017 release.
