The first trailer for Tomb Raider, the upcoming cinematic reboot of the action-adventure series that originally starred Angelina Jolie, was released online on Wednesday. This iteration, influenced heavily by the latest video games in the franchise, stars Academy Award-winner Alicia Vikander as the iconic treasure hunter, Lara Croft.
It’s an origin story, which retells the story of Lara finding out the truth behind her father’s death. He has left behind clues for her, which take her to a strange island. There, Lara must locate a hidden tomb, and close it forever.
Along the way, she runs into a group of mercenaries led by Walton Goggins’ character. Goggins’s famously played quintessential Quentin Tarantino characters in the director’s last two films, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight.
The film looks an awful lot like the 2013 video game reboot, right down to some scenes looking almost like lifted cutscenes from the game. The locations are familiar, as are the weapons Lara utilises. But there seems to be one key difference: humour. The video games were a serious adventure story, with very few supporting characters for Lara to play off. Here, that void is filled by Daniel Wu and Nick Frost.
Directed by Roar Uthaug, Tomb Raider is scheduled for a March, 2018 release.
