The 65-year-old star has joined actor Matthew Fox in the cast of Emperor, to be directed by Peter Webber and set in Japan during the aftermath of World War II, the Hollywood Reporter said.

"Tommy will bring strength, intelligence and gravitas to the portrayal of Gen Douglas MacArthur, a legendary American hero," said producer Gary Foster.

MacArthur played a key part in the Pacific War during the Second World War and served as a field marshal of the Philippine Army, defending the country against Japanese invasion in the Philippines Campaign, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the US government's highest military decoration.

Production on Emperor will begin later this month.
