A 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself inside the bathroom of a government girls’ shelter home in Dehradun on Wednesday evening. She was accused of murdering her mother last year.

The 14-year-old was brought to the shelter home on May 3 following court orders.

According to police, it received information about the incident from the District Probationary Officer (DPO). Police said she had locked herself inside the bathroom and was found hanging. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The DPO could not be reached for a comment till the filing of this report.

“Prima-facie it seems to be a case of suicide but no suicide note has been found so far. She used to live with her mother in Haridwar. She was apprehended for her mother’s murder in 2018 and brought to the shelter home,” said Sunil Panwar, station house officer of Nehru Colony.

The chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Usha Negi went to the shelter home after the incident was reported. “She was depressed and wanted to go back to the women’s shelter home where she stayed earlier. But before the official process of transfer could take place this incident happened,” said Negi.

She further said that all departments need to be alert and make sure that children living at the shelter home do not feel lonely.
