Bihar, UP news: 3 bodies recovered from Gandak River in Maharajganj amid Nepal flash floods

As many as 106 tourists from Nagpur, who were stranded in flood-hit Nepal, have reportedly safely left Kathmandu for Bihar's Danapur after Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's intervention, his office said on Thursday evening.

The Maharashtra CMO said that Nepal MP Sandeep Rana arranged four minibuses to transport 106 people from Kathmandu to Janakpur. They are expected to reach the Janakpur-Bihar border on Friday morning.

Buses have also been reportedly arranged for their journey up to Danapur in Bihar, from where they would return to Nagpur by train.

Bihar, UP news LIVE updates: The Delhi government has temporarily put the "Indo-Nepal Maitri Bus Sewa" on hold for the next two days as a preventive measure.

Road transportation has been completely shut down on the National Highway, Delhi-Kathmandu Route in Nepal, news agency PTI reported, citing officials.

This comes as the administration had put some districts of Uttar Pradesh on high alert.

Bihar, UP live updates: After flash floods hit Nepal on Wednesday, three bodies were reportedly recovered from the Gandak River in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district on Thursday.

According to news agency PTI, SSB Inspector Arun Pandey said that three bodies believed to have been swept into the Gandak from Nepal had so far been recovered in Indian territory.

Pandey added that the river is flowing rapidly following heavy flooding in Nepal and more bodies could potentially be swept into Indian territory.

Notably, the identities of the deceased were not immediately known.

The local administration is also monitoring the water level and flow of the river.

Meanwhile, the monitoring of the Gandak and other water bodies downstream of rivers in Nepal has been stepped up.

Bihar, UP live updates: Three bodies, including two women, were recovered from the Gandak River in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district on Thursday after they were apparently swept downstream from Nepal, reported news agency PTI, citing officials.

A rescue team of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) spotted the bodies being carried by the strong current, it added.

Bihar news LIVE updates: Following sudden flash floods in Nepal on Wednesday, Bihar was placed on high alert. Meanwhile, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during a press briefing on Thursday, said New Delhi stands "shoulder to shoulder" with Kathmandu.

Jaiswal said, "Whatever requests for assistance we receive from there, we will proceed accordingly. As I mentioned, our Prime Minister spoke to the Prime Minister of Nepal yesterday and conveyed that we are ready to provide whatever assistance is required."

"At the same time, India stands shoulder to shoulder with Nepal during this difficult time," he added.

Bihar news LIVE updates: After conducting an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas, Bihar chief minister Samrat Choudhary said the situation is gradually stabilising.

"We went up to Valmiki Nagar and took stock of the situation. The situation is gradually stabilising, and there does not appear to be any major water-related problem now. The Home Minister and the Prime Minister have been in constant touch with us and are closely monitoring the situation in Bihar," the CM told reporters.

Bihar news LIVE updates: MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared an update on the relief aid sent by India to Nepal during a press briefing on Thursday and said, “Two aircraft carrying humanitarian assistance have been sent to Kathmandu. A C-130J aircraft took off yesterday at around 8:30 p.m., carrying 10 tonnes of relief material, including temporary shelters, blankets, high-quality solar lamps, medicines, etc.”

“Then, this morning, a C-17 aircraft departed with 37.5 tonnes of supplies, comprising 28.5 tonnes of relief items, such as tents, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, dewatering pumps, kitchen sets, generator sets, etc.; 8 tonnes of medicines; and 1 tonne of food items. In total, across the two airlifts, India has sent 47.5 tonnes of emergency relief supplies aimed at supporting Nepal's ongoing rescue and relief operations,” he added.

Bihar news LIVE updates: Uttar Pradesh Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh on Thursday said the state’s border districts remained safe after a surge of water from flood-hit Nepal passed through the Narayani river system, with no major impact reported in Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing concerns over the flood situation in Nepal and the subsequent alert in UP’s border areas, Singh said heavy hailstorms and excessive rainfall in Nepal’s Rasuwa district triggered a glacial lake burst. This raised concerns over a large volume of water flowing downstream towards Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, news agency ANI reported.

“Rasuwa district, located in Nepal, witnessed heavy hailstorms and excessive rainfall, which caused a glacial lake to burst. It was anticipated that the resulting surge would flow through the Narayani and Kosi rivers into Uttar Pradesh and Bihar,” he said.

Bihar news LIVE updates: National Disaster Response Force on Thursday said there has been no "adverse" impact of the devastating Nepal flash floods in the border areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh till now, but the situation is being continuously monitored in coordination with the two states governments, news agency PTI reported.

Bihar news LIVE updates: Amid fears of rising water levels in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh following deadly Nepal flash floods, nine NDRF teams have been deployed in Bihar, while one team is stationed in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, news agency ANI reported, citing the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Two NDRF teams are deployed in Muzaffarpur and East Champaran in Bihar, while another team has been kept ready for deployment in Nepal, according to the NDRF.

Bihar news LIVE updates: IG NDRF Narendra Singh Bundela on Thursday said that Central Water Commission (CWC) is monitoring the water level in the Gandak River at Valmiki Barrage (Bihar-UP border).

He added, “Two planes full of HADR assistance have been sent to Nepal. One of our teams is on standby; it can be sent if we receive a request from the government of Nepal.”

He added that India will remain in constant contact with Nepal and will provide all possible cooperation in relief and rescue operations.

Bihar, UP live updates: While Bihar and UP are on high alert, other Indian states are also amplifying efforts to get in touch with those reported missing in the Nepal floods.

Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, questioned the chief minister C Joseph Vijay-led state government on Thursday over the Tamilians missing in Nepal floods, asking whether any action has been taken so far.

Bihar, UP live updates: On Nepal flash floods, Bihar CM Samrat Choudhary said, “Currently, the situation is gradually returning to normal. This disaster in Nepal has been a matter of concern, and everyone has had to worry about it. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister are continuously monitoring the situation in Bihar as well as Uttar Pradesh. Things are now gradually returning to normal. There has been rainfall, due to which some additional water is flowing in. However, with around one lakh (cusecs) of water currently being discharged, the situation from here to Patna is gradually normalising.”

Bihar, UP live updates: Authorities in Bihar’s West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj and Muzaffarpur stepped up preparedness, including evacuation of residents from vulnerable areas to safer locations, after a flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River upstream killed at least nine people in the neighbouring Nepal and Tibet, washed away villages and damaged infrastructure on Wednesday.

Bihar, UP live updates: The flash flood about 200 kms north of India border may result in water level rising in rivers flowing from Nepal such as Gandak in Uttar Pradesh and parts of north Bihar. Trishuli river which intakes most of Bhote Koshi river that originates from Tibet, flows into Gandak.

Heavy rain and gates of barrages in Nepal being opened could also cause more water flow into Ghaghara and Rapti rivers in Uttar Pradesh, and Kosi in Bihar.

The visuals we saw yesterday were extremely distressing, showing people running for safety. We feel that the Bihar government needs to remain more vigilant, and everyone needs to stay alert. There is also a possibility that the impact could be felt in the Gandak River and other areas of Bihar. Therefore, it would be better for everyone to remain alert and cautious."
