The CPI leader in his letter urged the PM to help farmers who have suffered huge losses due to drastic climatic changes that resulted in failed crops recently.

In his letter, Viswam reminded PM Modi of the union government’s claims of making the agriculture sector ‘farmer centric’, therefore requesting the Centre to announce relief packages to such farmers who have incurred losses.

The CPI leader further asked the government to provide a sum of at least 15,000 per acre to help farmers in the recovery of their losses.

“Crops of wheat, mustard, chana, sugarcane and seasonal vegetables have been severely damaged and farmers are facing huge losses,” Viswam wrote in his letter.

Referring to the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), launched in 2016 as a flagship crop insurance scheme that aims to provide support to the farmers financially, Viswam stated that an imperative scheme like this cannot be absent at such distressing times.

“I trust that this issue will be taken up on priority by the government and appropriate action will be taken,” Viswam added.

Unseasonal rains, accompanied by strong winds and hailstorm in parts of the country including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Talangana has added to the woes of the farmers.
