A 26-year-old Kenyan woman was allegedly raped by a 31-year-old man who claimed to be a tourist guide whom she met in the pilgrim town of Rishkesh, the Uttarakhand Police said Monday.

The woman was assaulted by the accused Hemant Thapliyal on March 8 but she registered a case on Sunday night after which police nabbed him within six hours, said a police officer.

The victim had come to Rishikesh from Kenya on March 7 to attend a religious event of a seer in the town.

“On March 8, while she was roaming in the town, she met the accused, a local, identified as one Hemant Thapliyal, who described himself as a tourist guide. He then offered her to take her to visit popular places in the town on his two-wheeler. She went with him to a popular tourist spot named Neer Guddu Waterfalls in the evening where Thapliyal raped her,” said station house officer, Muni Ki Reti police station, Ramkishor Saklani.

The woman was assaulted once more.

“The victim somehow came to the nearby road, but accused dragged her to the nearby bushes and raped her again. She then somehow escaped from there and reached her hotel. Finally on Sunday, she registered a case against him following which police initiated an investigation and nabbed him within six hours,” Saklani said.

The accused was presented before the court on Monday which sent him to jail while the victim was taken to a hospital for medical examinations.
