In a shocking incident, a monkey ‘robbed’ a man and his daughter of Rs 1,40,000 on Monday, as they were about to enter a bank. Aggrieved shopkeeper Vijay Bansal said he would meet senior police officials on Wednesday after the local police said they were clueless about the section under which a case could be registered.

Bansal said he was about to enter the Indian Overseas bank located on the first floor of an under renovation building in the Nai Ki Mandi area at around 10.30am, when the incident took place. His daughter Nancy, 17, was holding the polythene bag that contained around Rs 2 lakh cash.

“There were many monkeys and one of them suddenly snatched the bag as we were climbing the stairs. The monkey quickly moved to the top floors and we couldn’t do anything,” said Bansal, who has small jewellery shop in Rawli.

“The bank guard and others turned up, as the monkey tore up the bag and scattered Rs 60,000, which were recovered. We rushed to the ground floor to collect this money. We also tried offering edibles to the monkey to get back the bag,” he said.

“Police at Nai Ki Mandi came for assistance, but the money could not be recovered. I am not aware of the legal provisions, but my hard earned savings are gone,” he said, adding that he was in debt.

Meanwhile, CP Sharma, in-charge of Nai Ki Mandi police station, said, “At most, we can note down the information provided. But we can’t find the provision of law under which his case can be registered.”

Bansal is now pinning hopes on SSP Agra Amit Pathak whom he would meet at the collectorate on Wednesday.

Agra has been plagued by the monkey menace for a long time. Recently, a tourist at Taj Mahal and a medical student were injured in monkey attacks.
