In January 2019, the then Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan suspended a total of 45 members of the TDP and the AIADMK for disrupting Parliament proceedings for days.
The second week of the monsoon session of Parliament began with multiple adjournments and continued protests by opposition MPs over inflation, GST price hike and LPG price rise. Today's stir saw as many as 19 Rajya Sabha MPs get suspended for the entire week. This is the most number of parliamentarians from the Upper House to be suspended in a day.

On Monday Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla suspended four Congress MPs from the Lok Sabha for the monsoon session over protests and showing of placards; which have been banned per current parliament rules. In a statement later, Birla's office said the speaker was compelled to take the decision as despite assurances of not creating ruckus and allowing the House to run smoothly, the opposition MPs breached the norms.
