Parliament highlights: Arun Jaitley says Indian economy growing at 7-8%, inflation under control

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day amidst uproar by Congress MPs on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks against his predecessor Manmohan Singh and the BJP’s ‘smear campaign’ against the UPA in the 2G spectrum case.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day amidst uproar by Congress MPs on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks against his predecessor Manmohan Singh and the BJP’s “smear campaign” against the UPA in the 2G spectrum case.

The final adjournment came minutes after the House met post lunch at 2 pm. after Congress members continued with their noisy protests, seeking apology from Modi over his remarks against Manmohan Singh and others, and from BJP for its attack against the then UPA government over 2G spectrum allocation.

A bill on making Triple Talaq a punishable offence and another one to give constitutional status to the backward classes panel is set to be introduced in the Lok Sabha next week.

Here are the highlights:

7.40pm: Lok Sabha has adjourned till 11 am on Thursday.

7.30pm: Indian economy growing at 7-8 per cent which is new normal; inflation under control: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

4.40pm: As many as 375 air safety violations have been reported till December 15 this year, the government told the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

2.52pm: Jaya Bachchan, Rajya Sabha MP, reacts to Sachin Tendulkar’s speech being stalled by uproar in the House. “He (#SachinTendulkar) has earned name for India at the world stage, it is a matter of shame that he was not allowed to speak even when everyone knew it was on today’s agenda. Are only politicians allowed to speak?”

12.17pm: BJP MP from Chandigarh, Kirron Kher, asks the government to continue unlimited education to the children of soldiers.

12.10pm: TMC MPs stages a protest over linking of social sector schemes to Aadhaar.

12.08pm: Congress MP Kapil Sibal says: “We are saying that the PM should come to the house and give a clarification, this govt was formed on the basis that UPA embroiled in 2G and other scams, but now it has been proved that it was just a scam of lies by the opposition.”

11.38am: As all the accused in 2G spectrum scam are acquitted, Azad says: “They should now prove on which basis they had alleged that there was scandal of Rs 1.76 lakh crore. Through false campaign an environment against UPA was created and was the reason we are here in the opposition benches and you are there in treasury benches.”

11.35am: Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said in the Rajya Sabha before it was adjourned till 2pm: “Till yesterday (Wednesday) we had been demanding the Prime Minister’s clarification on his remarks against Manmohan Singhji but today another incident took place and now we want clarification on both the issues,” Azad said.

11.30am: Union parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar on Thursday said the bill on triple talaq will be tabled in the Parliament on Friday.

11.25am: During Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, discussion is on artificial recharge to ground water.

11.18am: Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu adjourns the House till 2pm amid sloganeering by opposition members.

11.10am: In Lok Sabha, Biju Janata Dal MP Pinaki Mishra questions civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapati Raju over construction of airports in Odisha as Congress workers continue to demand PM Modi’s apology.

11.02am: Rajya Sabha resumes with opposition members, led by the Congress, walking to the Well of the House over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment against Manmohan Singh.

9.20am: In Rajya Sabha, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has given notice to discuss right to play and the future of sports in India.

9.15am: The Lok Sabha, which passed the Indian forest amendment bill, will also see the bill to amend The Specific Relief Act, 1963, to cap compensation for infrastructure and development projects, as granted by courts. This bill is seen as yet another step of the government directed at ease of doing business.

9.10am: In Lok Sabha, the Centre will introduce The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights of Marriage) Bill, which criminalizes instant Triple Talaq, in Lok Sabha on Thursday. The Bill imposes a prison term of up to three years and fine on husbands who violate the law. It also makes a provision for alimony for the woman on whom instant triple talaq has been pronounced and grants her the custody of her minor children.
