Thousands of police officials have been deployed in Chennai after a hospital reported that DMK president M Karunanidhi’s health has declined.
Karunanidhi’s younger son and political heir MK Stalin his elder son MK Alagiri and daughter Kanimozhi met Tamil Nadu chief minister E Palaniswami at his residence on Tuesday afternoon. There are 6,500 police officials deployed in Chennai now.
Hundreds of supporters of Karunanidhi, 94, are gathered outside the Kauvery Hospital, which on Monday announced that the former chief minister’s health has declined.
Sources at the Kauvery Hospital said Karunanidhi’s pulse and blood pressure, which touched critical levels at the time of admission, had witnessed improvement but slipped by Monday noon. They added that there are infections in the chest region and this also poses the complication for the medical team treating him in the intensive care unit.
Karunanidhi was shifted to the hospital on July 28 after being treated at his home in Chennai’s Gopalapuram for fever and urinary tract infection.
President Ram Nath Kovind, vice-president Venkaiah Naidu, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, actor-politicians Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth were among those who have visited the hospital and met Karunanidhi’s family.
