As the hospital reported a deterioration in DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s health, party working president MK Stalin met with Tamil Nadu chief minister E Palaniswami.

Police were being heavily deployed across the city as hundreds of party supporters continued to gather outside the hospital where Karunanidhi is being treated. The party supremo has been under critical care for the last 10 days. Doctors on Monday evening said there was a decline in his condition.

Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, executive director of Kauvery Hospital, said in a health bulletin at 6:30pm on Monday the 94-year-old former Tamil Nadu chief minister’s response to “medical interventions over the next 24 hours will determine his prognosis”.

“There has been a decline in the medical condition of Karunanidhi. Maintaining his vital organ functions continues to remain a challenge considering his age-related ailments,” the bulletin said.

Sources at the Kauvery Hospital sources said Karunanidhi’s pulse and blood pressure, which touched critical levels at the time of admission, had witnessed improvement but slipped by Monday noon. They added that there are infections in the chest region and this also poses the complication for the medical team treating him in the intensive care unit.

Hundreds of DMK workers started marching towards the Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet in the heart of the city as news of the deterioration of Karunanidhi’s health broke out on Monday evening. Outside the hospital, the DMK cadres kept shouting: “Get up and come.”

All senior DMK leaders, including party general secretary K Anbhazhagan, working president M K Stalin and DMK legislators rushed to the hospital. Karunanidhi’s elder son MK Azhagiri and his half-sister Kanimozhi also stayed in the hospital till late at night.

Traffic diversions were imposed in parts of central Chennai as party cadres and people started thronging the hospital.

Karunanidhi was shifted to the hospital on July 28 after being treated at his home in Chennai’s Gopalapuram for fever and urinary tract infection.

President Ram Nath Kovind, vice-president Venkaiah Naidu, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, actor-politicians Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth were among those who have visited the hospital and met Karunanidhi’s family.
