Prosecution counsel RS Behniwal said that Gurpreet Singh appeared in the court in connection with a criminal defamation case filed by septuagenarian Mahinder Kaur in 2021. Behniwal said that the court has fixed September 15 as the next date of hearing, when the complainant is scheduled to record her statement. He said that the court also adjourned the hearing on the complainant’s plea seeking confiscation of Ranaut’s passport.
Ranaut attended the court proceedings via videoconferencing. In 2021, Mahinder Kaur had filed a complaint alleging that Ranaut had defamed her in a post on X by wrongly identifying her as Bilkis Bano, a protester associated with the Shaheen Bagh stir, and suggesting that such women could be hired for ₹100 to take part in protests.
