UP govt submits report on Mathura violence to Centre

“We have sent a report to the Centre on the incident, explaining the sequence of events that occurred in Mathura’s Jawahar Bagh on June 2. We have told the Centre that a team of officers had gone on a reconnaissance mission to the periphery of Jawahar Bagh when they were attacked by squatters belonging to the Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik Kranti Satyagrahi (ABVVKS). Then the police and civil administration personnel regrouped and got the park vacated. We have provided details of the deceased and the injured as well,” said state police chief Javeed Ahmad.
“The state government has already ordered a probe into the incident. We will have to wait for the inquiry report to check whether there were any lapses in the action taken against the squatters,” he added.
A senior state administration official, however, described the report as a ‘bland’ narration of facts.
Aligarh commissioner Chandra Kant is heading the probe into the incident. “I have already visited Mathura once, and will go there again soon. I will try to complete the inquiry as soon as possible,” he told HT.
Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has already admitted to some lapses in the police’s handling of the Mathura clashes, which resulted in the death of 29 people – including superintendent of police Mukul Dwivedi and station house officer Santosh Yadav. Ram Vrikhsa Yadav, leader of the ABVVKS, was also killed in the incident.
The ABVVKS claims to owe allegiance to freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
BJP chief Amit Shah and Union home minister Rajnath Singh have been targeting the state’s Samajwadi Party government over the incident. While Shah has accused Shivpal Yadav – state minister and younger brother of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav – of patronising a faction of the cult, Singh has called for a CBI inquiry into the incident.
