Acting on a tip-off that a group of ULFA militants had come to Moukhati village near Deodhar Chariali to extort money, a team led by Superintendent of Police Nitul Gogoi went to the area.

As Gogoi's convoy was attacked by the militants, police retaliated and were joined by the accompanying army and CRPF personnel.

A gun-battle ensued in which the police shot the two militants but they managed to escape along with some other ultras.

Police claimed that the two ULFA cadre were shot in the legs and must be seriously injured but the duo remained untraced.

Another ULFA cadre, identified as Chandan Hazarika, was apprhended.
