23,000 km roads in 3 years

ABOUT 23000 km long rural roads would be constructed in the State under the Bharat Nirman project in coming three years. These roads would connect about 7000 villages.

This was informed at a high level meeting convened at Mantralaya here today to review progress of the roads. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reviewed the progress of roads taken up by various agencies.

Proposals to start construction of 3800 km roads this year would be forwarded to the Government of India. Roads measuring 8900 km have already been constructed in the State under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) providing road connectivity to over 3000 villages.

Minister for Public Works Kailash Vijayvargiya, Minister for Rural Development Narendra Singh Tomar and Principal Secretaries of the concerned departments participated in the meeting.

The Chief Minister gave instructions to set up a special cell in the Forest department to facilitate construction of roads in forest areas and remove the procedural complexities in road connectivity.

He said that there is no paucity of funds for widening and strengthening road network and adequate staff would be arranged to efficiently execute road construction projects. He also gave instructions to organise training of contractors involved in road construction and promote participation of public sector companies.

The Chief Minister said that an effective mechanism should be evolved for long term monitoring and maintenance of roads constructed. Shivraj Singh said that no road under the PMGSY should remain incomplete without construction of bridge or culvert across. He instructed the authorities concerned to impart training to the staff of public works department in project management.

He asked the agencies associated with road construction works to take it as a mission and perform outstandingly.
It was informed that in coming three years the public works department intends to connect divisions to the districts and districts to the tehsil headquarters.

All roads would be constructed in accordance with the quality norms of Indian Road Congress. Principal Secretaries of concerning departments were present.
