An estimated 55 to 60 per cent of 4.72 crore voters in the state exercised their franchise.

Barring an incident of altercation between the state minister, Inbatamizhan and MDMK candidate, Ravichandran, in Venkatachalapuram area in Sivakasi constituency, polling was peaceful, throughout, the Chief Electoral Officer, Mrutungjay Sarangi, told newsmen at the secretariat on Monday evening.

Pointing out that he was awaiting for a report on the incident from the Virudunagar district collector, Sarangi said the matter had been taken to the notice of the Election Commission, which had asked for a report.

When his attention was drawn to complaints of large-scale deletion and omission of voters from the lists in several parts of the state, Sarangi said an enquiry would be ordered into these complaints and officials responsible would be taken to task.

Early on Monday morning, Jayalalithaa, after casting her vote, said that large number of names had been omitted from the voters' lists.

Meanwhile, the DMK President, M Karunanidhi, condemned the incident at Sivakasi and sought the immediate intervention of the Election Commission.

The state unit CPI-M demanded not only the arrest of Inbathamizhan, allegedly involved in the Sivakasi incident but also his sacking from the AIADMK ministry.
