Earlier this week, Bengal U-19 cricketer Ankit Keshri died after a collision with a team mate while attempting a catch.

The incident occurred last evening when T Vamshi Krishna, a UKG student, was playing cricket with his friends in the neighbourhood and while fielding, a "powerful shot" played by a 12-year-old boy hit him straight on the chest, they said.

"Vamshi was fielding in a close-in position. A hard tennis ball hit him on his chest and he suddenly collapsed on the field. Some onlookers immediately took him to a nearby hospital where doctors after examining declared him brought dead," Vanasthalipuram police station Inspector P Gopala Krishna Murthy said.

A case under section 174 CrPC has been registered in this regard, after the boy's father lodged a complaint, he said.

"We are collecting evidence (by recording statements of eye-witnesses) and will finalise the case," Murthy said, adding that investigations were underway.
