Bhopal: CBI to establish special centre to investigate Vyapam scam

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will set up a special centre for its anti-corruption unit in Bhopal in order to facilitate the probe into the Vyapam scam, the first time the agency will set up headquarters outside Delhi.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will set up a special centre for its anti-corruption unit in Bhopal in order to facilitate the probe into the Vyapam scam, the first time the agency will set up headquarters outside Delhi.

According to CBI sources, the agency has been facing a manpower crunch, which has made it difficult for the probe to progress. CBI’s staff is also understood to be less than keen in staying in Bhopal for a long time. To ensure that the probe is not further delayed, the CBI approached the Centre to set up a special branch in Bhopal.

“The government has approved the setting up of a second headquarter for investigating the Vyapam scam in Bhopal, while creating and operationalising 321 posts under various ranks,” said RK Gaur, CBI press information officer.

“A total of 237 posts have been created for the officers of DIG level to constables, besides 20 legal experts and 67 clerical staff. All facilities and infrastructure will be provided to the staff,” Gaur added, adding that officers from the state police and other enforcement agencies would be taken on deputation by the CBI as per requirement.

The CBI, which is probing the multi-layered recruitment and entrance examination scam, has registered 112 cases of corruption against more than 2,000 accused. The agency is also probing 24 deaths related to the scam.

Presently, the CBI operates from a government bungalow allotted to it at Professor Colony in Bhopal.
