Akhilesh Singh, 37, a clerk in the legislative council, went missing since Friday evening when he left his home riding on his motorbike. The police recovered the bike from a deserted place on Saturday, but found no trace of Singh. This suggested Singh might have been kidnapped, the police said.

"After the police recovered his motorcycle, we strongly feel that he (Singh) has been kidnapped," said Singh's elder brother.

Singh's family lodged a complaint on Saturday following which the police began investigating the case without any breakthrough so far.

The kidnapping has created panic among people, who threatened to launch protest if the police fail to rescue Singh by Monday.

Singh is said to be an active supporter of the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and was allegedly involved in lending money at high interest rates, which the police suspect could have some bearing on his sudden disappearance.
