The CBI probe into the killing of liquor smuggler Dara Singh in a fake encounter by the Rajasthan Police in October 2006 has revealed that one of the accused, BJP MLA Rajendra Rathore, allegedly threatened Singh’s wife and relatives of reprisals if they approached the police or courts to seek a probe into the incident.

“There are evidences, documentary as well as technical, to establish that it was under Rathore’s directions that the special operation group (SOG) had abducted Dara Singh and then killed him in a fake encounter,” said a CBI source adding after Dara was killed, Rathore used his relationship with IPS officer AK Jain, accused in another case, to foil attempts by his widow and relatives to lodge a police complaint about the fake encounter.

Despite Rathore’s threats, Singh’s wife went ahead and filed a petition with the Supreme Court on whose directive the CBI took over the probe into the incident from the local police in April 2010.

Singh was killed near Jaipur on October 23, 2006. Rathore allegedly conspired to get Singh killed owing to their rivalry over illicit liquor trade. The CBI has arrested Jain and named him in the chargesheet for his alleged role in the murder conspiracy.
