“The gradual changes in the formation of individual letters resulted in evolution of various script,” said Prof Verma.

Prof TP Verma was delivering a lecture on the ‘Kushana Inscriptions’ organised at the Jnana-Pravaha, Centre for Cultural Studies and Research, in Samne Ghat area here in Ram Nagar.

He further said that all the Indian scripts were inter-linked because they all developed from the same alphabets.

Distinguishing between the language and script, Prof Verma made it clear that language was a spoken form of communication to be heard by others, while script is a visual form of language to be seen.

Prof Verma further said, “The earliest script of India is Brahmi. It was first noticed in the edicts of Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, who used it to write his instructions in Magadhan Prakrit language containing only 45 alphabets.”

Earlier, the joint director of Jnana-Pravaha, Prof Kamal Giri welcomed the speaker and course participants.

Acharya of Jana-Pravaha, Dr NP Joshi honoured the scholar and introduced him to the participants attending the meet.

The participants represented various academic institutions like the Banaras Hindu University, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth and Salar Jung Museum (Hyderabad).
