The Cabinet may on Wednesday take up the issue of bringing in legislation to make it mandatory for private broadcasters to share the feed of sporting events of national interest with public broadcaster Prasar Bharati.
According to sources, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry plans to take steps for enacting a law in this regard following the refusal by private broadcasters, including Nimbus recently, to share feed of matches featuring India despite government regulations.
With many of the broadcasters not shying away from challenging in court, the feed-share provisions, prescribed in the uplinking and downlinking guidelines, the government has decided to bring it in the form of a law.
In fact, Information and Broadcasting Minister PR Dasmunsi has already said the government will bring in legislation to make it obligatory on private broadcasters to share the feed of sporting events of national interest with the public broadcaster.
