"The gang's sharpshooter (Gupta) was shot by a team of our officers at Nana-Nani Park in Versova at around 2015 hours," Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) Bipin Bihari said in Mumbai.

Lakhan Bhaiyya, 36, said to be a close aide of Rajan, was also close to his lieutenant DK Rao, currently lodged in high-security Arthur Road Jail in Central Mumbai.

Acting on a tip-off that Bhaiyya will come to meet a contact at Nana-Nani Park in Versova, a police team laid a trap for him.

When asked to surrender, he fired at the police party, which retaliated wounding him, Bihari said.

Bhaiyya was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead, he said adding the weapon used to fire at police had been recovered.

"Once upon a time, he was Rao's boss. But later became his subordinate after Rao joined the Rajan gang," Bihari said.

Bhaiyya had at least 20 cases, including murder, dacoity and extortion registered against him and was wanted since 1993, police said.

"He was involved in Palghar triple murder case of 1994 and the killing of businessman Uday Acharya's driver in Andheri some years ago," they said.

Rajan gang member Sherpa Nepali was shot dead in an encounter with police at Saki Naka on October 30.
