"The issue is not of our making but an internal affair of the BJP-NDA,"Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, commenting on the alleged threat of at least two Independent ministers to resign from the State government.

"We do not need to cross the bridge till we reach that stage," he told reporters in New Delhi.

Asked about the political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Singhvi said the initial problem of the PDP had been settled to a large measure with the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Beigh. There was no crisis within the State government due to the internal differences within the PDP.

He clarified that the Congress had nothing to do with naming the Deputy Chief Minister from the PDP as it would be decided by the PDP itself. As for allocation of portfolios of the Ministers, it was certainly the prerogative of the Chief Minister to decide.

The PDP, Mr Singhvi said, had communicated to the Chief Minister their decision about the new incumbent for the Deputy Chief Minister's post. There was no question of the Chief Minister objecting to the PDP's nominee for the post.
