The Congress demanded a CBI probe into fake encounters by the Gujarat police and sought the resignation of state Home Minister for it. Alleging two dozen encounters since Narendra Modi became CM, spokesman Abhishek Singhvi charged that the BJP’s disruption of parliamentary proceedings when the matter was raised only reflected its guilt.

Singhvi also dismissed as "unbelievable" the claims of its former Nagpur MP Banwari Lal Puroshit that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had struck a secret understanding with the RSS to allow shilanyas at Ayodhya in return for its support in the Lok Sabha elections.

"He has changed so many parties that we cannot believe him. We do not trust his political loyalty and the BJP, too, should not trust him’’ Singhvi said.

Reacting to queries on the demand raised by some MPs of the European Union that Afzal Guru should not be hanged, Singhvi said that no foreign country or organization can influence India’s decision as to whether a convict has to be punished or pardoned. He dismissed these as comments.

Singhvi however, sidestepped the question on Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar’s comments that the 9% percent growth rate has benefited only 0.02% people.

"The Congress is for enlarging the size of distribution of cake…The large number of achievements in the recent past cannot be ignored,’’ he said.
